It’s a bit of a geeky pun, but the title of this post is actually the name of a “computational knowledge engine” product – Wolfram|Alpha.  It happens to share its first name with this week’s soloist’s surname – Wolfram.  William Wolfram, to be exact.  He’s the last-minute replacement for the mononucleosis-plagued pianist Jeffrey Kahane, who was forced to cancel his concerts with the Oregon Symphony this week due to a flare-up in his ailment.  All of us at the OSO surely wish him a speedy recovery, and hope to work with him soon.  Anyway, back to the lame pun: our pianistic Wolfram is actually our beta, since he’s coming in to replace our alpha.  Yeah, I know, lame.  Oh, by the way, did you know that wolfram is the “other” name for the element Tungsten?
