The Oregon Symphony announced three major grant received from foundations this month – all new money, rather than repeated funding from prior years – in fact the most recent grant from one of these foundations was received in 2005. The education programs will benefit during the 2009/2010 season from a $50,000 grant from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, which last gave to the symphony in 2004. The other two grants are to cover support of operations. The Collins Foundation has given $100,000 for the 2009/2010 season, and the Meyer Memorial Trust has given $150,000 for 09/10 season and an additional $150,000 for the 10/11 season. Collins last gave money in 2005, while Meyer last gave in 2001.

Great news! I can’t help but wonder whether the symphony’s efforts to get a handle on finances may have contributed to its receiving some of these grants. I sure hope so. In any event, I am sure that these grants did not happen by accident. They are undoubtedly the result of some good work by the symphony staff. Congratulations!
