oregon symphony v2.0

We’re into our first rehearsals with Music Director Carlos Kalmar for the upcoming Waterfront Concert at Waterfront Park at the west side of the Hawthorne Bridge on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.  Let me tell you, the orchestra is a different animal than even the last couple of years since Carlos arrived.  We have three spectacular new principal players joining us beginning this season, and they will not disappoint!  They are Principal flute David Buck, Principal oboe Martin Hebert, and Principal trumpet Jeffrey Work.  The sound of the orchestra is much different than last year, and we’re only in the first full week of the season – this bodes well for a great season of concerts.  I hope to see you there!

I was on the committee for the preliminary round for the Principal trumpet position (because of the large number of auditionees, we had two locations and a split committee, which necessitated a couple of extra players added to the usual number) and I actually remember hearing the candidate that would eventually be known as Jeffrey (and the winner) and thinking “this person is going to win this thing”.

It looks like you picked a very good trumpet player from the available online information.

That makes me wonder, what was someone like that doing looking for a job? Are your principal positions considered desirable by the nation’s top talent?

Anyway, I’m glad you were able to find an outstanding player and will look forward to hearing him playing the solos in “Pictures.”

Well, a job is a job – and they’re quite scarce. There are only 40 or so major orchestra principal trumpet positions in the country, and I’d say that at least 10 of those pay less than we do, so we’re pretty desireable.
