Over the weekend we had a visit from my old college roommate Tom Joyce, who is the bass trombonist of the Charleston (SC) Symphony. It was great to schlep him around to the audition on Tuesday, even though he did not end up getting the job. It was especially nice since it had been a year since we’d last seen Tom, at the home of a mutual friend last summer, and before that it had been several years between visits.
We had a couple of great dinners with him: on Monday evening we went to Typhoon! on Broadway before our OSO concert, and last night, after a trip up the Columbia Gorge to show him Multnomah Falls and Crown Point, we went to another of our favorites, Vindalho, since Tom’s two favorite cuisines are Thai and Indian. I agree with him that given either one, we could eat them happily every day for the rest of our lives!
A nice coincidence of being out in the gorge was that we ran into our guest concertmaster from this past week, Elisa Barston, along with her daughter, husband and in-laws at Multnomah Falls. It was nice to get to say goodbye to her after such a nice working week.
