Composer Daniel Ott
Friend and composer Daniel Ott, whose new work for string quartet, solo violin, and piano (á la Chausson) entitled Blue Water is being given its world premiere at the venerable Bargemusic concerts in New York City this weekend, deserves a shout-out from this blog. Way to go, Dan!
I’ve had a long association with Dan and his music. He has been the composer-in-residence at the Max Aronoff Viola Institute for quite a few years now, and I participated in early performances of his String Quartet, an oboe quartet, and the world premiere of a piece for solo viola – Parting, at the festival. He’s a composer to watch – consistently innovative and original, and with a real (and rare) sense of both emotion and structure that permeates all which he composes.
Here’s the listing from this week’s issue of the New Yorker:
By the way, Bargemusic artistic director Mark Peskanov keeps a blog concerning his activities both at the barge and elsewhere.

Thanks, Chas! The performances went extremely well, and the audience reception was very gratifying. The Shanghai Quartet and the two soloists did and incredible job!! I’m looking forward to making an orchestral version: solo violin, piano, and string orchestra; hopefully sometime this summer….
I do look forward to that indeed–I remember you had mentioned this to me–hope the premiere went well~
