I’ll leave the reviews to the professionals, but last night’s Evening With Jennifer Higdon concert presented by the Third Angle New Music Ensemble was one of the most enjoyable evenings of music that I’ve been to in quite some time. It was great to have a few minutes to chat with Jennifer talk shop for a bit, and do the obligatory hinting for a potential viola piece. My luck isn’t good, she’s booked for commissions through 2014!
Higdon was represented on the program by three major works – Celestial Hymns (2000) for piano, clarinet and string trio; String Poetic (2006) for violin and piano; and Zaka (2003) for violin, cello, clarinet, flute, piano and percussion. Thoroughly enjoyable pieces all, and all performed with skill, warmth, and virtuosity.
Composer Jennifer Higdon takes a bow with the Third Angle New Music Ensemble after a performance of her Celestial Hymns (2000) in Portland, Oregon.
Higdon fields questions at the post-concert reception.
Me and Jennifer reunited after 13 years – man, how time flies!
