It was a great way to end the season. Three sold out concerts with Pink Martini that were being recorded for a live concert CD. It was a great time for everyone, and will doubtless be a great way for a mass audience to become familiar with the Oregon Symphony.
It also marks the end of my 14th season with the Oregon Symphony. I remember at my audition, when in the final round I was asked by then music director James DePreist where I imagined myself being in five years’ time. I replied that I had no idea, only that I loved the Northwest and that it would be a pleasure to be in Portland with the Oregon Symphony. As a musician, you take little for granted, and chances for advancement are rare and fleeting, fraught with high odds and many, many determined and talented competitors for those few plum jobs that become available each year.
So, I count myself as fortunate that I live in this most European of American cities, so livable and embued with an ethos that makes perfect sense to those of us with a streak of individualism and an artistic temperament. Come this September, I’ll begin my 15th season with the OSO, and proudly so.

It’s great that you are part of the orchestra, and you and your fellow musicians can be very proud of what has been accomplished in recent years. Here’s hoping you have at least another 15 years!
Thanks Curtis! See you next season!
