The Polish composer Henryk Gorecki passed away today at the age of 76. The local memorial to this great composer (known best for his Symphony No. 3 “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs”) will be a performance by the Arnica Quartet of his First String Quartet “Already it is Dusk” at a concert presented by Marzena on Friday, March 25, 2011.
Here’s a link to NPR’s blog post about Gorecki.

Oh… I’m so sorry to hear this, I had no idea.
I was introduced to Górecki’s music through the British electronic music band/duo Lamb, on whom he apparently had a major influence. As a matter of fact, the band’s best-known track is an electronic ballad, if you will, named Górecki, a stupendous piece for its lyrics as well as music. A few techno remixes of it had also been done.
I’m going to miss Goo-RET-ski. I guess it’s time to go back and listen to the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs one more time…
I just came across the following at arnicaquartet.com:
“On Sunday, March 27th, 2011 at 2 p.m. we’ll be playing an all-Beethoven concert at Astoria’s McTavish Room of the Lincoln Theater. The program will be three Beethoven string quartets: Op. 18 no. 1, Op. 95, and the great Op. 130 with the Grösse Fugue ending. More information on tickets as it becomes available.”
Does the Górecki quartet performance on March 25th mentioned here replace this March 27th date/program, or is the 25th a newly added performance date (two days before the latter)?
Two separate concerts – March 25th in Portland at Community Music Center, and March 27th in Astoria at the McTavish Room in the Liberty Theater.
