I downloaded the pdf file of next season’s brochure, and it made me salivate jealously. Such a good balance between the new and old, warhorses and novelties. Makes me wonder what we’ve got on tap here at the Oregon Symphony…
Here’s the link to the brochure file – let me know what you think: highlights and/or lowlights?

I quickly scanned what they are doing. I guess what intrigues me most are the Damnation of Faust concert, the Knussen violin concerto with the four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes (Oregon Symphony, please program the sea interludes) and the Prokofiev/Shostakovich concert with concerto number 3 and the 8th symphony. I agree with you that they have blended their works pretty well but I still see an awful lot of overdone pieces, which is par for the course for orchestras around the country. I believe Carlos does just as good a job mixing things up down here, especially considering this is a pretty unforgiving audience in Portland that can really punish the symphonyat the box office if it goes too far off the beaten path in programming. I used to make the trek to Seattle to hear their symphony but I believe our orchestra more than holds its own so I do not feel any compelling reason to patronize their orchestra. I’m very happy with what we have here in Portland.
yes indeedy, some exciting things coming up up north next season.
my guess is that the SSO will get better & better the more & more “the jer” fades away from his loooooong-overstayed tenure.
dutilleux. knussen. ligeti. korngold. zappa.
seattle sonics – NOT the basketball team.
