Acclaimed soprano and breast cancer survivor Dawn Upshaw has cancelled her upcoming appearances with both the Oregon Symphony and the Eugene Symphony later this month. While no reason was given for the cancellation, given that Ms. Upshaw is a high-profile breast cancer survivor, one must wonder if her health plays a part in the decision. Regardless, I’m sure that I speak for all of us at the Oregon Symphony in wishing Ms. Upshaw well, and in hoping that we get to work with her at the soonest possible opportunity.
In the meantime, the Oregon Symphony will be revamping the Oct. 1 concert to feature the orchestra in the wake of its Carnegie Hall rave reviews. It is sure to be a barn-burner of a concert – so please come!
Update: This came in the comments for this post from OSA President Elaine Calder:
“It was Carlos who suggested putting together a concert and following Carnegie’s lead by offering very low ticket prices. All seats go on sale at 10am tomorrow, on line and through out ticket office, and tickets are $15, $20 and $25 with a family pack for $40. “Family” means up to five people, adults and kids aged seven to eighteen.
So this is going to be a Lighter Classics concert, led by our music director, with family-friendly prices. Let’s do all we can to get the word out because this is a chance for people to buy great seats and hear our splendid orchestra!”
