The Arnica Quartet returns to Astoria’s intimate venue the McTavish Room for an early January concert of string quartet favorites.
The concert takes place on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 2 p.m. The program will feature two of the most beloved string quartets of the 18th and 19th centuries: Mozart’s Quartet in C major , K. 465 “Dissonant”, and Dvorak’s Quartet in F major, Op. 96 “American”. Rounding out the program is the fresh and original String Quartet No. 1 of Benjamin Britten.
Tickets are $25, and are available through the Liberty Theater Box Office by phone at 503-325-5922 ext. 55 or 800-992-8499. Tickets are also available to purchase online at www.ticketswest.com.

Sounds like a great concert. But does the poster have the right program. It seems the printer preferred Schubert over “fresh and original.” : – )
That was the first incarnation of the program, but due to vacation schedules over the holidays, it made more sense to change to a piece that we’ve done already this season instead of the Schubert.
LOVE the britten, as you know.
personally, i’d keep schubert & dump dvorak.
in any event, i’m thrilled that you are getting some serious mileage out of benji’s first.
The Mozart and Dvorak were requested by the underwriters of the concert.
hahahaha, as i sometimes undertake being an underwriter, i guess i can’t possibly object to that logic!
so, let’s talk a bit more about salonen’s quartet when i re-inflate my withered checkbook!!!
Yes – very interested in that, especially if he might be in Portland. Perhaps you should float the idea of his manager talking with Charles Calmer at the OSA to see about doing a subscription set with us during March…??
i love your enthusiasm!
i’ve had a fine exchange of emails with esa-pekka’s manager & found out that the earliest he could come to pdx for march music moderne is 2016!!
so, i’m trottin’ meself down to frisco this coming week to hear salonen conduct the sfo in his violin concerto, sibelius (natch) & excerpts from gotterdammerung. i plan to meet eps & his manager backstage & further plead our cause.
stay tuned . . .
I just read an interview with Salonen on (Alex Ross’s blog,) and he’s planning on less conducting for a few seasons, to compose more was my impression.
you are absolutely right.
during 2013, EPS has a huge touring Lutoslawski series of programs in celebration of Luto’s 100th.
then, 2014-15 is mostly reserved for two big new pieces – rumor is that an opera is one of them.
that’s why i was told that 2016 is the EARLIEST he could possibly come here – if then.
however, fear not, i’m doing my best to make the lure as attractive as possible. i imagine that conducting a symphony concert series (Salonen, Sibelius, Lindberg & Saariaho – for example) wouldn’t strike EPS as “sexy” enuff in & of itself. after all, it’s this very sort of thang that he’s trying to minimize.
that’s why, i’m also proposing a series of 3 concerts (strings, winds, larger chamber ensembles) into which 9 of his own works would feature prominently.
fluff that up with a few Finnish films, Finnish Akvavit & a guest performance by Varttina – that wonderful group of 3 women singers from Lappland – and perhaps Esa-Pekka will give PDX a whirl?
can’t hurt to try.
and, when a good friend asked me where the money would come for such an adventure, i coughed a bit & then asked him to please not rain on my fantasy parade.
get EPS’s interest & the money WILL materialize – i’m certain.
ps
have you heard “Mania” – EPS’s kicker of a piece for cello & large ensemble?
:))))))
If anyone can make this happen, it’s you, Bob!
as my grandmother used to say; “Oy, stop with the encouraging, already!”
so, while waiting for a solid “maybe” from esa-pekka, i’m pondering who might be a worthy choice for MMM 2013 or 2014 – another composer/conductor package would be groovy.
the few that immediately come to mind include:
+ pierre boulez
+ thomas ades
+ oliver knussen
+ george benjamin
+ h.k. gruber
+ james macmillan
+ peter maxwell davies
+ michael tilson thomas (i’ve never heard any of his music, though)
+ john williams
are there some others you’d like to suggest?
a “problem” for me is that i’d have to be fairly enamored of this candidate’s work in order to muster the sustained enthusiasm such a project requires.
that said, i’d love to collect a few more names that i might have skipped @ the moment.
thanx.
