Yes, it’s that time of the year again when my stand is groaning with all of the music that is starting to accumulate for concerts taking place in the coming month of so. I thought it might be of interest for those who might be tempted to think that we orchestral musicians only work about 20 hours a week. Yes, we might spend that amount of time on stage at the hall, but there is at least that much time being spent at home in the practice room working on music for upcoming concerts, both in and outside of the orchestra. So, here is what I’ve got on my stand right now:
Britten – String Quartets Nos. 1, 2, and 3
Schiff – Suite for Improvising Soloist and Chamber Orchestra
Zorn – Cobra
Zorn – The Alchemist
Purcell – Chacony in G minor for strings, arr. Britten
Sibelius – Symphony No. 1
Glanert – Shoreless River
Wieniawski – Second Violin Concerto
Lutoslawski – Fourth Symphony
Schumann – Cello Concerto
Beethoven – Symphony No. 7
Primrose – The Art and Practice of Scale Playing on the Viola
Kimber – Scales, Arpeggios, and Double Stops for the Violist
Hindemith – Der Schwanendreher
Fuchs – 16 Fantasy Etudes
Bach – Six Suites for Solo Cello (arr. Rowland-Jones)
