concert preview the orchestra world

on the precipice

It’s that time of the year when the Oregon Symphony season has begun, but it is happening only in fits and starts. We had our wildly successful waterfront concert on August 28th, with an estimated crowd of 18,000 (!) music lovers at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Last night we had a sold out concert with the incredible singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile (who loves her some symphony orchestras, let me tell you). Really good stuff. This week, the s**t starts to get real. Trey Anastasio arrives to premiere a brand new work for symphony orchestra with us on Tuesday evening. Then we welcome one of our favorite piano soloists (and Artistic Director of Portland Piano International),  Arnaldo Cohen, for the Tchaikovsky Spectacular matinee on Sunday the 14th of September. Ben Folds and Herbie Hancock follow the next weekend, and then the classical subscription season really starts in earnest with the arrival of Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto on September 27-29. I can’t wait!
