45th Parallel happenings – June 2019

June is turning out to be a busy month for the members of the Portland collective 45th Parallel Universe.

Blind Pilot

The Helios Ensemble, the chamber orchestra made up of all the combined ensembles of 45th Parallel, will be backing up Astoria indie band Blind Pilot for two shows at Astoria’s Liberty Theater. The shows are June 14 and 15 (Friday and Saturday) at 7:30 pm. Blind Pilot has previously performed with the Oregon Symphony, and the show should be fantastic! Tickets are going fast, however. Tickets are $35 and available at the Liberty Theater website.

Pyxis Quartet.

The member-ensemble Pyxis Quartet has two performances this month, both featuring a masterpiece of the modern string quartet literature.

On Friday, June 21st, the quartet heads to Astoria’s Liberty Theater for a single performance of Georg Friedrich Haas’ String Quartet No. 3 “In iij. Noct.” This spectralist masterpiece is notable for its being performed in complete and utter darkness. It is an experience not to be missed! Tickets are available from the Liberty Theater’s website.

Black Angels score.

On Thursday, June 27th, the Pyxis Quartet is in Portland for makrokosmos 5: black angels. We’ll be concluding the marathon concert at Vestas with a performance of George Crumb’s seminal 1970 masterpiece for electric string quartet, Black Angels. The event begins at 5:00 pm with a happy hour, and the Crumb performance begins around 9:00 pm. Tickets available at makrokosmos’ website.
