We’re just about to head back to work at the Oregon Symphony for the better part of our season. The holiday break seems like it would be at the halfway point of the season, but in fact it’s about a month shy of halfway. The real meat of the season begins with the new year. We’re right into it with our Kid’s concert this Sunday. The main musical feature of the concert is Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. It’s a spectacular piece which shows off the orchestra’s virtuosity, and is always one of my favorites. Then, on Monday morning, it’s time for our first classical series rehearsal concert of the new year. It brings a true orchestral rarity: Hindemith’s Concerto for Orchestra. It’s a relatively early work of the German composer, full of vigor and craziness. And we’re joined by the great Andre Watts for another favorite of mine, Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. I can’t wait.
