Just learned of these two news items in the local Portland classical scene via the always excellent Oregon ArtsWatch: Huw Edwards, conductor of the Portland Columbia Symphony for the past 12 seasons, will resign his position effective the end of this season. Huw has been a nearly constant presence in Portland since his days as music director of the Portland Youth Philharmonic, and he will be missed. Also, former Oregon Symphony exec. Scott Freck will be returning to the Northwest from North Carolina to take over the helm of the Eugene Symphony effective June 11, 2012. Scott was highly effective with the Oregon Symphony, and I’m sure that the Eugene Symphony will rise to new heights under his able leadership.
