This morning we had our dress rehearsal in the Great Hall for this evening’s opening concert of the orchestral portion of the Sunriver Music Festival (there was a piano recital Thursday evening featuring Yeol Eum Son). This will be an interesting concert, with quite a bit of variety, considering that it’s all mainstream fare. The concert opens with the Sunriver Festival brass section playing two canzonas by Gabrielli, originally intended for the great St. Mark’s cathedral in Venice.

The SRMF’s new concertmaster Jun Iwasaki will then play two gems of the violin repertoire: Dvorak’s tuneful and passionate Romance, and Vaughan Williams’ pastoral and evocative The Lark Ascending. After intermission comes Mozart’s great Symphony No. 41 “Jupiter”. I’m looking forward to it a lot! Hope you can make it – there are still some tickets available.
